An arc sweep rotates a wide threat around the boss. It works when the pivot and edge are visible, the safe region remains reachable, and the committed motion creates a reliable opening.

Implementation checklist

Tune the signal, the pivot and arc, response time, and recovery.

Core checks

Three questions for the mechanic

  • Is the signal specific?

Show the pivot, start angle, direction, and moment the rotation becomes fixed.

  • Is the response reachable?

Measure the nearest safe route from both close and distant positions.

  • Is the opening useful?

Keep the boss committed long enough for the player to reposition and act.

Design mistakes

  • Hidden rule

If the signal does not reveal the pivot and arc, the hit feels arbitrary.

  • Wrong scale

If timing is tested only at one upgrade level, the pattern can become trivial or unavoidable.

Tuning

Tune the attack

  • Match visuals and collision

The visible threat must match the active hitbox in space and time.

  • Start with ordinary abilities

Keep one response available with abilities the player already has.

  • Retest upgrades

Check movement, range, damage, and invulnerability against every phase.

Arena

  • Make the arena support the rule

Use enough clear floor to read the arc edge; remove props that hide the pivot.

Player upgrades

  • Respect player upgrades

Test the strongest available build. If an attack is blocked, make the immunity clear and preserve another useful response.

Do not confuse this with

  • Name the exact pattern

A sweep rotates an edge around a pivot. A spin is centered on the boss; a beam may keep tracking.
