World-state variants let time band, region condition, game mode, or shared world flags choose a coherent version of the encounter. The game previews the relevant context, resolves it once at entry, and keeps the selected package stable through every attack and retry.

Resolve Kern's eclipse-ruin package at the world gate Three world-context runes converge into an eclipse-ruin package, which creates two arena seals, a ring attack, and a matching reward; an outside change to dawn does not replace the captured package on retry. Boss Player

Implementation checklist

Define context inputs, normalization, precedence, snapshot timing, variant IDs, changed rules, geometry, roster, rewards, fallback mapping, save migration, retry persistence, preview cues, accessibility, and telemetry.

Core checks

Three questions for the mechanic

  • Which world facts are allowed to select a variant?

Choose a small explicit input contract such as time band, region state, difficulty mode, or shared liberation flag. Normalize every value, define precedence when several flags overlap, and map unknown or migrated saves to a tested baseline instead of branching directly on the whole save file.

  • What changes as one coherent package?

Give each variant a stable ID and author its rules, attack geometry, roster, phase timing, arena dressing, audiovisual cues, and reward table together. Preview the relevant context before irreversible entry and make the first unique threat teach what this package changes.

  • When is the selection allowed to change?

Resolve the package once at a clear encounter boundary, persist its ID through death, reload, reconnect, and checkpoint retry, and only resnapshot after an explicit exit or reset. Log compact context IDs and the resolver version so designers can compare variants without storing the full world state.

Design mistakes

  • The variant is only a hidden multiplier

More health or damage does not communicate a different world condition. Change at least one legible rule, spatial problem, roster relationship, or reward, and signal it before the player must respond.

  • Mutable context leaks into live combat

Polling day-night time, network flags, or world events every frame can replace an attack or reward halfway through the encounter. Freeze a versioned snapshot and queue external changes for the next valid entry.

Tuning

Tune the attack

  • Use a table, not scattered conditionals

Map normalized context keys to named packages in one resolver. Validate that every package has rules, assets, rewards, localization, and a baseline fallback, then test the resolver independently from presentation.

  • Budget variants by changed decisions

A useful variant asks for a different read or response, not a duplicate content set. Reuse the core rig and attacks where they preserve mastery, then spend production effort on the rule, geometry, roster, or reward that makes the context meaningful.

  • Compare completion by package ID

Record resolver version, normalized input IDs, selected package, entry, completion, retry, fallback, and reward grant. Compare failure points and clear rates across packages, but do not infer difficulty from completion rate alone when access conditions differ.

Arena

  • The gate remembers the sky it opened under

At entry, three runes tell Kern which covenant governs the duel: eclipse, ruined ground, and cursed mode. The gate seals that answer. Even when dawn reaches the world outside, Tavi's retry remains inside the same covenant.

Player upgrades

  • Expose the rule without demanding prior lore

Represent each context through redundant color, shape, label, and sound; show the selected package before its first threat; keep contrast and timing readable in every variant; and offer a stable baseline when seasonal, online, or time-based context is unavailable.

Do not confuse this with

  • A normalized world package, not live time or a personal history replay

Real-time progression applies elapsed time while the game is closed. Run-history manifestation materializes specific prior choices. A world-state variant consumes normalized context at entry and selects one authored package whose rules and rewards remain stable for that encounter.
